The earliest wardrobe was only a chest and didn’t hold much. Nobility who had achieved a high rank could have an entire room that they called a wardrobe. Shelving was added to the room and much later, drawers.

The nineteenth century saw the development of the modern day wardrobe. They were made portable for people traveling from Europe to the United States and continued to be widely used because the homes that were built seldom had closets.

There is a wide range in today’s wardrobes but their basic design is a wooden box with rails to hang clothes. Other additions include shelves and drawers and they can replace the need for a closet or dresser.

Wardrobes Models to Choose

There are various types and styles, but the two broad categories are fitted wardrobes and free standing wardrobes. Under those two categories are more focused selections. Traditional wardrobes have doors that open, but there are also sliding wardrobes.

The self assembly kind is often made of pine or melamine and they are usually cheap wardrobes. Armoires are the old-style and usually made in wood, often oak or walnut. They sometimes have drawers in the bottom but no other shelving. Some of the fancier self assembly styles are customizable and often cost more and come with baskets, shelving and other options.

The fully customized wardrobe is the option with the most choices. You can choose the size and number of cabinets and color and finish of the piece as well as the inside storage options. This is the most expensive of the choice but the highest quality.

What to Look for when Buying a Wardrobe

When selecting the kind to buy, there are several things to consider.

  • You will want a color and wood that will complement your other bedroom furniture since this likely the largest piece in your room.
  • You will have to think about what you will store in it.
  • Will it be used in addition to a closet or dresser?
  • How you will use it will influence the type of wood you will choose for durability.
  • You will also want a piece that is in scale with your other furniture.

A wardrobe can become a major cost and you want to choose one that will suit your needs and fit in well in the room where you will use it.
